The "male quartette" promised on the cover is the Mellotones, best known for including the cult bass Thurl Ravenscroft. The record also includes a few brief (and surprisingly effective) recitations by child actor Anne Whitfield. Five years later she played the General's daughter in that holiday film staple, White Christmas.

Wakely was a fine singer; in his easygoing manner he was kind of a country Como. This is an exceptionally pleasant (if brief) album in good sound.
Wakely would go on to have his biggest Christmas hit in 1950 with "Silver Bells", done with his frequent partner Margaret Whiting, although they split the market with the Bing Crosby-Carol Richards version.
Several years ago I posted Wakely's later Christmas LP, which he issued on his own Shasta label. A link to a reup is in the comments.

Thanks for the double dose of Christmas tunes, Buster. As a lover of cowboy music, this hits the spot.
ReplyDeleteThank you for this nice audio gift!
ReplyDeleteI've never tried a cowboy Christmas - but this seems like a good time to start!! Thank you!

Thank you, sir! A welcome addition to the yuletide celebration.
ReplyDeletelove this! really great share. thank you.
ReplyDeleteSome of these songs made those cool Capitol CD Christmas collections of the mid-1990s (when they did all those great cocktail/lounge comps); sorry don't recall which but they might still be in print, look for one called Cowboy Christmas...might have been a couple of them.
ReplyDeleteI really like the early Wakely album, Christmas on the Range. Simple arrangements, solid country. I had read (in Merry Christmas, Baby) that Christmas on the Range was Capital's third LP release.
ReplyDeleteThanks!

Buster...I have some "Western" and "Western Swing" albums, so this may well fit right in. Plus my daughter-in-law is a "cowgirl," so I will have to get a copy to her! Thanks for what looks to be an interesting Christmas record. The cover artwork is really good as well.
