Dick Haymes has long been one of my favorite singers. While a collection or two of his recordings are usually available, these packages tend to be recycle the same items over and over.
I have a relatively large collection of Haymes on 78 and some day when I get a lot more time and energy, I will transfer some of the many items that have never been rereleased. Until then, I'll present his 10-inch LPs now and again.
This one is from 1951 and in common with the majority of his Decca LPs collects a bunch of singles, all very well done, including gorgeous renditions of Stella By Starlight and Laura. He is accompanied by Victor Young or Gordon Jenkins on most of these titles.

Thank you. I'm only familiar with the more common singles that wind-up on compilations, so if you plan to post some un-comped material in the future, that would be appreciated.
ReplyDeleteAlso one of my favorites. Thanks very much.
ReplyDeleteIf you're going to head into Haymes country (which I gratefully applaud), why not look through your library for 10-inchers of the singers like Bob Manning who owed so much to him and paid back that debt in full. You would be doing another world of service by calling attention to this glorious strain of deep-throated crooners in the twilight of this wonderful kind of singing. Thanks for patrolling the many musical universes that you do.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments, everyone.
ReplyDeleteDavid, I actually collect Bob Manning records. I don't believe he ever came out on 10-inch LPs, but there are a few 12-inch records and EPs and a bunch of singles. Capitol even (much to my surprise) issued a Manning CD in the 90s. I'll prepare a post on him one of these days.
There have been requests at my blog for more Haymes. I'm glad you are able to oblige here at BIG 10-INCH RECORD. Thanks Buster!
ReplyDeleteI have only one Bob Manning CD, a 2005 Japanese reissue of "Lonely Spell," which I find an extraordinary album. I've heard of the 1990's anthology, but I foolishly didn't buy it when I had the chance. So I look forward to any shares you may make.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to get home and listen to the Koussevitzky.
Other requests: Igor Stravinsky recorded several of his works for RCA in the mid and late 1940s. I remember hearing "Orpheus" decades ago and being impressed. Do you have any of these albums? Also, RCA released Yehudi Menuhin's recordings of Bartok's violin and piano sonatas. I do not understand why these have never been reissued on CD. They deserve hearing. But, then again, I haven't heard these performances since the mid-1960s. I just remember Menuhin being one of the greatest interpreters of Bartok's music ever. I still cherish his recording of the violin concerto with Furwangler.
David,
ReplyDeleteLonely Spell is Manning's only 12-inch Capitol LP and represents his best work. There is another LP on Everest (IIRC; I am out of town). Again, if I remember correctly he also recorded for MGM, RCA and perhaps other labels, and with a couple of bands.
It seems to me that I have a 10-inch RCA LP of Stravinsky conducting his Mass; I'll have to check that and what else I have. Not sure about the Menuhin, but I doubt I have that one.
To my recollection, the Everest Manning LP's were "Our Wedding Album" a collection of wedding songs and a Tommy Alexander Trombone album where he sang maybe 4 songs?. I have both. Neither of them particularly memorable. The RCA recordings were more or less rockabilly. There were 2 very good bootlegs on LP that were very good. One was basically the Lonely Spell with some extra tracks, and the other was a lovely compilation of his capitol and some RCA tracks. One track that stand out to me was Venus DeMilo.
ReplyDeleteI finally gave this a listen. I'm either hot or cold about Haymes, depending on the recording. This one was swell. Thanks, Buster.
ReplyDeletePlease re-up when you get a chance/ Thanks.
