Here's the second in a short series of early recordings of Gian Carlo Menotti's music, in this case the first recording of music from his 1944 ballet Sebastian.
These selections are just as attractive as the Menotti violin concerto presented on this blog not long ago. The performances led by Dimitri Mitropoulos are excellent. The "Robin Hood Dell Orchestra" was by and large (if not entirely) composed of Philadelphia Orchestra musicians.
Columbia issued this recording in 1947, a big year for Menotti, whose short operas The Medium and The Telephone had been presented on Broadway to some acclaim.
The cover is by Alex Steinweiss. Columbia's sound and surfaces were very good. My copy of the original 78 set has some dish warp, but it does not affect the sonics to any great degree.

ReplyDeleteWhat a JOY to get this rare recording, Buster! I have adored this music since I acquired Stoky's remarkable 1954 NBC Symphony version of the Suite, which luckily was done in early stereo.
DeleteHere's my "reply": a live 1970 concert (premiere?) of the Triplo Concerto a Tre by Menotti, BRILLIANTLY performed by, err, a certain Eastern US orchestra and a certain famed Hungarian-born conductor and aficianado of Americana. It will be evident at once who this is, from the beginning announcement and the picture I've appended to the file.
Unfortunately, it was recorded off the air from an FM station that employed the ODIOUS CBS Laboratories "Audimax" and "Volumax" compressor and limiter. I did a little finessing to try to put back some of the character but it's nearly hopeless.
When the Phil--ooops, secret orchestra put together a special box of its historic live performances in the late nineties, I pestered its producer (in vain) to try to get this performance included. He was not impressed; but I sure am! There have been two subsequent CD recordings by other artists, but this one tops 'em and probably NEVER could be equalled. I can only imagine what the master tape must sound like!

8H--oops, name on request! File expires in 30 days, so if I skip the country until then, maybe I'll be safe!
Yes, I do admire Menotti's music, which is rather out of fashion.
DeleteThank you Buster.
