Matt Dennis on Capitol 78s

These days, Matt Dennis is mostly known for his compositions - Angel Eyes, Violets for Your Furs, The Night We Called It a Day, Everything Happens to Me, all available in superb Sinatra renditions - but he also was one of the finest singers of the post-war era.

Dennis displayed his vocal talent throughout several LPs released in the 50s, all or almost all of which have been re-released. But before then he made a number of records with Paul Weston for Capitol, beginning in 1946. This post captures nine of those sides, as found in my collection of 78s.

None of these records contain Dennis' own compositions, although you will find contemporaries such as Hoagy Carmichael (above) and Johnny Mercer (below). Mercer, I believe, wrote the lyrics to (Love's Got Me in a) Lazy Mood, with the music by tenor saxophonist Eddie Miller, who plays on the record.

Dennis did not have the voice of many if not most pop singers - although anyone who once was a vocal coach for Jo Stafford and her sisters must have known something about singing - yet his style and sensitivity are very winning. He could handle songs of all types, including the A Trout, No Doubt, a nonsense song like Swinging on a Star, without the moral. The Trout is part of today's catch, and just to make sure you get its full effect, I have corrected its speed, which apparently was increased to get the song under three minutes.

Update: I've repitched and remastered all these sides.

  1. Matt Dennis is a particular favorite of mine; I have a few of his LPs but not the Capitol 78s.

Many thanks indeed for sharing them.

Lead me to wonder what other Capitol 78s you may have in your collection...

By the way, don't you think it might be a good idea to open a new "label" for 78s?

  2. Hi Mel,

Interesting thought - I will be doing more 78s on this blog because (after all) they are 10-inch records. Two downsides: preparing 78 transfers is very labor intensive and my 78 collection is almost completely uncategorized. I do have a couple of odd 78 items coming up, and then I may prepare some Dick Haymes.

  3. Thanks, Buster. I wasn't even aware of these recordings. Would you happen to know how many sides Dennis made for Capitol?

  4. @ Scoredaddy,

I spent some time trying to determine that, without any luck - I haven't been able to find a Capitol singles discography, unfortunately. These records were released in fairly close time proximity, so I doubt there were many more by Weston-Dennis, but I could well be wrong.

  5. When I began collecting in the 1980's, I went directly to get as much Doris Day's LP as I could find. Her Day by Day album, with Weston's orchestrations, is still a huge favorite, not only because of her, but the combination of her voice and his perfect background he gave her. He did the same to his wife Stafford. (quite a busy guy!).Since then, I found some of his 10'' and 12'' that I like as well. I'm no specialist (more a Coup de Coeur guy, not a good critic) but I found his touch easy to recognize.
Thanks for sharing these little treasures.

  7. Thanks for your comments, everyone. I too like Paul Weston and have many of his records. I will prepare one of the 10-inchers soon.

The Walter Bruyninckx Jazz Discography does not list any Matt Dennis sides on Capitol.

Under Paul Weston, the only sides with Dennis listed are:

Paul Weston and his Orchestra : no details except for Matt Dennis (vcl)
    New York, c. late 1940's:

1192-3R-1 Just squeeze me (md vcl) Cap 285
1193-4r-1 Ole buttermilk sky (md vcl) -
    New York, c. late 1940's
1581-4r Roses in the rain (md vcl) Cap 362
    1582-51 Linda (md vcl) -
    New York, c. late 1940's
1871-41-1 In a lazy mood (md vcl) Cap 425
1872-31-1 A trout, no doubt (md vcl) -

Buster has more than Bruyninckx knew about…

  9. Thank you for posting these. In addition to appreciating your bringing 10 inch records to light, I really appreciate the care you put into presenting them here.

    Thank you.

  12. Buster, Matt Dennis has always reminded me of fellow composer-singer Bobby Troup. These are superb recordings. I especially loved making the acquaintance of "So Would I" and "Roses in the Rain." The pairing of Dennis with Weston makes perfect sense since Weston was with Dorsey as an arranger around the time Dennis was churning out masterpieces for that band. Thanks so wonderfully much for this stellar batch of records. May I also make the heretical aside that I prefer Dennis's version of "Linda" to Buddy Clark's? And he's certainly the equal of Johnny Mercer on "Love's Got Me in a Lazy Mood." I take it Eddie Miller is the tenor sax soloist on all the sides. Do you have any Troup 78s from this period? There's someone who could use some championing. Again, these are wonderful recordings and listening to them has made my day (which, incidentally, is my birthday).

  13. Happy birthday David! Good to hear from you. I have to tell you that I also prefer Dennis' version of Linda to Buddy Clark's. I don't know if Eddie Miller is the tenor soloist on all the sides, but when I noticed a tenor solo, it did sound like him to me. I certainly do have Bobby Troup records, although I wouldn't swear that I have 78s. I know I have his 10" LP on Capitol. It's been reissued, but it might be nice to feature it here anyway.

  15. Thanks for remastering these. I am a big fan. Frankly I like all your transfers, so an improved matering by your standards is worth having I am sure!
